“Foksal” block, a piece of real estate situated in the capital’s downtown, near the Poniatowski bridge and Warsaw escarpment, is one of the most prestigious areas in Śródmieście district and one of many places which require shaping up. The “Foksal” competition was announced on December 18th, 2001. Designers, both from Poland and abroad submitted 74 plans, the prizes were awarded to the winning designs in June 2002. Looking for the spatial development concept that would embrace revitalizing underdeveloped areas in Śródmieście was one of the aims of the competition. Another was to curry out a public debate on how to suit the rules and methods of effective planning to the social and economic reality of the market economy. The main outcomes of the competition, apart from the awards, are recommendations and proposals. They are basis for future changes in the local law and development plans, which will stimulate increase in both the value of the real estate and the profitability of future investments.
